A Cardiff employer has been fined £400,000 after a worker tragically lost his life in what the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) described as an “entirely avoidable” workplace accident.

The 59-year-old employee suffered fatal injuries while repairing an industrial overhead door. An HSE investigation found the company had failed to properly maintain its equipment, carry out suitable risk assessments, provide the correct tools, or ensure the employee had the specialist training needed to perform the repair safely.

Even more concerning, there had already been two previous incidents involving similar equipment, yet the necessary safety improvements had not been made.

Every employee has the right to work in a safe environment. Employers have a legal responsibility to identify risks, maintain equipment, provide appropriate training and put safe working procedures in place. When they fail to do so, the consequences can be devastating.

While no amount of compensation can undo the impact of a serious workplace accident, it can provide financial security and help those affected move forward.

If you’ve been injured at work because your employer failed to keep you safe, or you’ve lost a loved one in a workplace accident, you may be entitled to claim compensation.
