When people think about injuries, they often picture major road traffic accidents, construction site incidents, or dramatic workplace injuries. Yet one of the most common causes of injury in the UK is something far more ordinary: a slip, trip or fall.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), slips, trips and falls on the same level account for around 30% of all non-fatal workplace injuries in Great Britain, making them the single largest cause of workplace accidents. Approximately 680,000 workers suffered a non-fatal workplace injury during 2024/25, with slips and trips continuing to be a major contributor.

Outside the workplace, falls are a major public health issue. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) reports that around one-third of people aged 65 and over fall at least once a year, rising to around half of those aged 80 and over.

In England alone, there were approximately 210,000 emergency hospital admissions linked to falls among people aged 65 and over during 2022/23. Of those admissions, nearly 147,000 involved people aged over 80.

Many accidents occur because hazards that should have been identified and addressed were simply ignored, with some of the most common causes including; wet or recently cleaned floors without adequate warning signs, uneven paving slabs and potholes, and trailing cables and obstructions.

If your accident happened because another party failed to take reasonable care, you may be entitled to compensation. Seeking legal advice at an early stage can help you understand your options and ensure important evidence is preserved.
